Google, Yahoo, Bing Lost Search Engine Market Share in China in 2009

Even before the highly publicized news about Google’s bold plan to produce uncensored search results in China, its popularity in the mainland has been dwindling. This is according to iResearch, a local Chinese search consultancy firm.

In addition to Google losing search market share in mainland, Yahoo! and Bing also lost a certain portion of their slices in search popularity in China. Google had 18.9 per cent share of Web searches done in China in 2009, compared to 76 per cent enjoyed by Baidu. In terms of percentage points, Google’s share is down 1.8 per cent while Baidu gained 2.8 percentage points, iResearch said.

Yahoo! Search Problem

Yahoo! seems to have problems accommodating search queries recently because I noticed that a simple search yielded no results. Instead, an error message was promptly displayed in behalf of the expected page listings:

We had temporary problems searching for web pages. Search again for [search query] or type a new query above.

Percentage of search queries for Yahoo did not change that much so it must indeed be temporary problem we don’t see most of the time.

Google, Yahoo!, Baidu Lead Asia Search Volume

Google Sites led the region with 39.1 percent of all searches conducted, followed by Yahoo! Sites (24 percent) and Baidu.com (16.7 percent).

Google led the region with 39.1% of all searches in April 2008, followed by Yahoo with 24%. Baidu ranked third with 16.7%, and was the highest-ranking Asia-based search engine, one of five that appeared in comScore’s top 10.

Chinese searchers were the largest as a group, with 82.8 million. Japan came second with 60.05 million, then India with 28.1 million.

Ad at Marketing Interactive Website

This isn’t much about search engine optimization but basically this is about user experience. Once in a while I visit Marketing Interactive website because I like the fresh news that is interesting (not necessarily relevant) to me. However, one ad that annoys me is that one from Euro RCSG that mimics a medical instrument used to measure a patient’s heartbeat. While I am reading articles, the sharp tone of the “hearbeat” featuring the services of Euro RCSG Singapore. Just a bad ad with respect to user experience because it tries to captures the reader’s ears if not the eyes. Worse is that the ad doesn’t have a mute feature to stop a reader’s agony. I wonder if Euro RCSG did this on purpose. The only way I can get rid of the annoying noise is to leave the site.
