BarCamp Hong Kong 2011

For the first time since it was first held in Hong Kong in 2007, I will be joining BarCamp, a gathering of enthusiasts not necessarily like-minded but collectively embrace the culture of open learning.

Described as “an ad-hoc “unconference” born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment”, BarCamp provides a platform for people to share, learn or both without the formalities quite common in organized conferences. That means you may a master of iPhone app development but nobody’s going to prevent you from sharing your passion for landscape photography. Predictably, I shared about search marketing in 2007.

SES Hong Kong Photos

Although I missed a significant portion of the conference, I can confidently say that Search Engine Strategies Hong Kong was a successful event – judging from the talks I attended. After almost three weeks, here are some of the photos taken during SES Hong Kong.

Here, I am presenting about web analytics best practices with Matt McGowan, Publisher and Head of U.S., Incisive Media and Hari Shankar, Head of Search APAC, Performics.

Buy East Asian Games Tickets Online Opportunity

If you are a scalper or someone trying to dispose of your East Asian Games ticket, you might be happy to know that a search for “east asian games tickets’ don’t display any ticket website on the first page of Google search results. This could mean that for people who fail to find relevant information on where to buy tickets (me included) may have to look elsewhere to secure them. I wanted to watch taekwondo and volleyball events but so far I am empty handed.

Secretary’s Day Flowers: Capturing Audience At The Right Time

Secretary’s Day (also known as Administrative Professional’s Day) is celebrated to honor and recognize the work of secretaries, administrative assistants and receptionists. This year Secretary’s Day will be on the 22nd of April.

Probably in the search engine usage patterns, there will be a surge in secretary’s day related terms. This is the same as when people tend to search for “gifts” or “christmas” related keywords during the last months of the year. In the case of secretaries, bosses might be looking for gift ideas, such as flowers, chocolates or cards. It’s also an opportunity for sellers of these items to attract buyers through search engine marketing.

Discover Hong Kong, HK Tourism Board Advice

Brand Republic reports that Hong Kong Tourism Board has relaunched its website in an effort to boost consumer interaction.

Discover HK, HKTB Website

It now involves social networking sites such as Google Maps, Flickr, Facebook and YouTube in promoting Hong Kong as a travel destination. This is definitely an upgrade from the previous version in terms of interactivity.

However, I also have some unsolicited advice for the site’s webmasters when it comes to search.

Display site in one domain name
Currently, the site is displayed in at least two domains: discoverhongkong.com and hktb.com. That means when you enter either domain, one type of content shows up. What is the problem with it, you ask? From usability and search engine perspective, it divides the attention of human visitors and search engines. People who would visit one site could get confused to discover the another that displays the same content.
