Keyword Ranking Now Embedded on Google Results: AJAX-based Google Results Coming Soon?

When I make my posts in my Hong Kong blog, I use its custom search function and directly copies the URL of desired search results. However, in recent experience, I can’t do it anymore. That’s because there are extra parameters are now included, on top of the visible URL on search results. Noted by Search Engine Land, Patrick Altoft and Google System blog.

So I decided to dig deeper and found one interesting numerical parameter value. First ranked page gets a value of one, second has 2, and so on. Parameter values are embedded on a JavaScript event such as the following:

Copying the URL directly from the search result shows a similar parameter value embedded on another variable.

Google Sitelinks Update?

I happen to see a new format of Google Sitelinks while performing search query this morning.

Notice the layout of the links. They occupy less space but they are also aren’t as prominent as in previous layout as shown here.

Another query showed a surprising layout. The top ranked didn’t get any sitelink at all, but the site ranked below it has sitelinks using the new format!

Google Sitelink Enhancement?

So far I not yet found an official statement from Google regarding this update.

Snippets? Google Displays Longer Descriptions for Longer Queries

In case you haven’t noticed, Google now displays longer snippets for certain search queries. Take a look at the following search results.

Shorter Google Snippets
Using “dh placement fee” search query

Longer Google Snippets
Using “story how much placement fee dh in hongkong” search query

The first query is shorter, composed of just 3 keywords. The search results displayed shorter snippets. Snippets are pieces of text content that appear below the hyperlinks on search results. The second query is longer, now with 8 keywords. Google now displays longer search snippets, supported by its official statement in its blog post:

Google’s Take on URL Keywords

One of the reasons I made the changes to this blog is to make URLs keyword-rich and optimize search engines.

Good timing to answer a question on whether optimizing keywords on URLs is something we should focus. Google’s Matt Cutts gets interviewed about it. His thoughts on the matter can be viewed on the following video:

Google Displays Duplicate Results

I recently revamped the look and feel of this blog and one of the changes I did was to convert the URL structure from the trivial numeric assignment to keyword-rich URLs (talking about walk the talk).

To implement such change, old URLs like www.seo-hongkong.com/blog/?p=951 will now be redirected to www.seo-hongkong.com/blog/free-seo-seminar-in-hong-kong-951.html. But I didn’t expect the two to show up when I entered the phrase “free seminar hong kong”.
