HKU, City U Joins Google Online Marketing Challenge

Tue, Feb 26, 2008

Google

The University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong fielded a total of 15 teams in the competition called Google Online Marketing Challenge. The challenge aims to get students work with businesses near their campuses and allow them to plan effective online marketing campaigns. These students are given free $200 Google AdWords credits during the campaign. After outlining their strategies, running campaigns and assessing results, students will also provide further recommendations to businesses they’re working with.

Works will be evaluated by a panel of judges from different academic institutions around the world.

Wouldn’t it be nice to prove clout in the online marketing arena, while still at school? A chance to visit Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California and meeting the creators of Google AdWords would just be a bonus to me.

There are also guides that help students fulfill this challenges. At the same time, this AdWords guide should also be a good reference to others who are starting to play around with AdWords.

I wish other schools also joined. Polytechnic, Chinese U?

I wonder why only one school (Surigao del Sur Polytechnic State College) in the Philippines joined? Are other schools busy with other things? Kudos to fellow Mindanaoans who fielded four teams and basically represented the whole Philippines.

Wanna join? It’s too late for 2008. But don’t worry, marking our calendars for October 2008 opening for 2009 entries will be a good thing to do.

Good luck guys.

So is the future of SEO/SEM looking brighter in this part of the world?

  3. Elmer W. Cagape Says:

I could only hope for that to happen. But I think it should be more than these Google initiatives. More effort must be done.

Its a big educational piece and alot of knowledge sharing required.

I guess the market where you are is not as competitive – but just out of interest have you experience any sites which have recently been banned or penalised by Google?

We have seen many sites in very competitive sectors penalised for what looks like link buying their way up the search engine rankings.

You’re right. The market here isn’t as competitive as in UK.

In 2005 I submitted a local site to Google for hidden text and a week later the site disappeared from Google’s index. But it didn’t take long before it was reinstated back — after removing those hidden text.

HK — and Asia in general — has a long way to go before achieving similar status as with US or Europe.

I really liked your thread about this, and I’ve seen a few more like it recently – the best part about yours is, it’s very informative and useful and full of good information without a bunch of usless rants and BS!

I’ll be sure to give this URL to some friends

    Thanks Again
