In addition to the custom segment report I posted yesterday, I’d like to talk about advanced segments as one of the new features in Google Analytics.
Advanced segmentation allows Google Analytics to drill down reports based on our personal requirements, similar to the way it’s done in custom segments. However, more than just a custom segment with one condition, this feature allows us to provide additional conditions related to our initial requirements. For example, in the previous post, I set up a custom segment that will tell me how many among my daily visitors are from Hong Kong. With advanced segments, I can set up additional conditions such as:
Number of visitors from Hong Kong >> who used the term “hong kong blog” or “living in hong kong”
Number of visitors from Hong Kong >> who entered the site directly (bookmarks, typed in the URL)
Here’s how it is done to execute the second condition:
If I want to find out further like:
Number of visitors from Hong Kong >> who entered the site directly (bookmarks, typed in the URL) >> who spent no less than five minutes within the site OR uses PCCW’s Netvigator connection
simply add the new conditions and be aware of what AND and OR means:
AND – both conditions need to be true
OR – either of the two conditions need to be true
By creating these advanced segments, they will be handy to access if we regularly need the information they spit out.
