Google announced that Google Mail (aka Gmail) is now officially open to everyone. That means no invite is necessary to get an account.
This info was already scooped by Search Engine Land even before the official blog came out. (I know it’s not a good comparison but everytime a news is released before an official company statement comes, I remember those illegal DVD copies showing up in conspicuous areas before the legit DVD is released.)
Then again, if the invite is no longer necessary, why is the invite box still found within the Gmail interface?
